The importance of attending a school with an accredited broadcasting program is imperative. An accredited status in broadcasting and mass communications indicates that a program has met the values and standards that the broadcast journalism industry has established for schools of higher learning. Accreditation also helps students ensure that the program of study they will partake in will help to prepare them for entry-level positions in the broadcasting industry upon graduation in.
The only agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit broadcasting and other journalism & mass Communications oriented programs is the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). They review broadcasting and other programs and grants qualifying ones an accredited status providing students and others confidence in the program and its integrity.
In addition, the United States has six regional accrediting agencies:
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
